SECOND SIMPOSIUM ON ENERGY, WATER AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT EXPERTS 2010
GOVERNMENT STRATEGIES IN WATER AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT 2 OF 3

In October 2009, the Federal Government started the campaign of: Water is like your family, protect it. In which they invite to have a culture of care and saving of water.

- Currently, 43% of the water used in the country is treated, and in México City 6%.

- With the Bid for the Atotonilco Plant, the expectation is to treat 40% of the water used, and the goal is that by the end of the Six year period, 60%, and in 2016, 100% of water used is treated.

- However, México City presents the problem of sinking due to having drained water from the underground. Currently, México City sinks one meter every ten years.

- Of every ten liters that reach México City, four are lost due to leaks in houses, in the streets and in the system. Four out of ten liters are lost.

Fifty years ago, each inhabitant had Eighteen thousand cubic meters of water per year on average; we had approximately five times what is currently calculated; now we have on average four thousand cubic meters of water per inhabitant a year.
In México, there is over a hundred water systems overexploited, such as the ones in Torreon, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Puebla, Tlaxcala, Morelia among many others.
An investment of One Hundred Million Pesos has been made in water systems: water for farmers that do not have in their communities, water through treatment plants; in example, in three years 175 treatments plants have been built and 32 additional have been rehabilitated.
In another hand, the Eastern Emission Tunnel is being constructed, to prevent floods in México City.
This topic will be discussed by experts in the Second Symposium for Energy, Water and Sustainable Development. For further information
