GOVERNMENT STRATEGIES IN WATER AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT 3 OF 3

The goals for Sustainable Development are not limited only to environmental aspects, they also include social issues, such as education, health and other elements that are reflected in Human Development and Margination Index indicators. Among the agreements and social programs of the Federal Government aimed for sustainability, are the following:

- Approval of the “Follow up to Implementation Against Corruption Mechanism”, in the U.N. convention in Qatar.

- This mechanism will allow to identify the needs of technical assistance of the Joint States and encourage the exchange of good practices in the combat of corruption. For a better implementation of the Merida Convention, additional resolutions in topics of technical assistance for combat of corruption, aimed to recover illegally subtracted items from a country, and for the development of actions of prevention.

Another main topic is the access of the information according to federal data since the time when Mexico adopted the right to access public information –in 2003- until September 2009 there have been satisfactorily attended close to 90% of the over 430 thousand requests for information.

- Even though there is still too much to learn in manners of transparency, it is without a doubt a tool that allows citizens to interact with the government to improve quality of life.

- In another issue, the government through the National Council to Prevent Discrimination (CONAPRED) looks to encourage the national agenda against discrimination by ways of strengthening judicial defense, promotion and awareness, as well as public politics on the matter.

- Finally, in the Index for Human Development report, the U.N. acknowledged an improvement Mexico had in closing the social gaps.

This topic will be discussed by experts in the Second Symposium for Energy, Water and Sustainable Development.
